Toll free numbers are used by businesses and individuals as a convenient way for others to call them and reverse the charges. Toll free numbers start with 800, 888 or 877. Telephone industry standard policy is that your toll free number is your tool to manage. As such, there are certain points to keep in mind.
- If this is a new toll free number, test it to make sure it rings to the correct phone number. While toll free service is usually implemented without any problems, once in a while a problem does occur. If there is any problem with your toll free number, contact customer service right away.
- Your toll free number belongs to you. If you change long distance carriers, you can take your toll free number with you. This is true if you are switching to us from another carrier or if you are switching away from us to another carrier.
- Your toll free number can ring to any working number in the U.S. If you move or change phone numbers, call customer service to redirect your toll free number to your new number. This process takes approximately 24 hours.
- A toll free number is not a separate phone line. It uses your existing phone line. Anyone calling your toll free number will get the same response as if they called your direct number. There is no distinctive ring or other feature to tell you how the person called. If you have any phone system features (call waiting, hunt groups, fax machine, etc.), they will work the same whether someone calls toll free or direct.
